A pencil grade is just a clay-to-graphite ratio. More clay makes a harder, lighter, more durable point; more graphite makes it softer, darker and faster to blunt. Staedtler's Mars Lumograph runs the ladder from 9H to 9B, and the reason it is a studio standard is consistency: a 4B from one box behaves like a 4B from the next.

Which grades you actually need

Most drawing lives between 2H and 6B. H grades hold a point for construction lines and technical work but scar the paper if you press. B grades give you tone and darkness but smudge, so work left to right if you are right-handed and keep a sheet under your hand. Three pencils, an HB, a 2B and a 6B, will cover more than a full set of twenty-four.
