Crayon covers several different things. Sketching crayons are compressed pigment and clay in a square stick, made for broad tonal drawing and the classic sanguine and sepia portrait tradition. Wax crayons are bound in wax and sit on top of the paper, which is what makes wax resist work with watercolour over them. Water-soluble crayons dissolve under a wet brush and turn a drawing into a wash. Graphite crayons are simply graphite without the wooden barrel.
