Most of what slows a painting session down is not the paint. It is a palette that dries out between sittings, a brush washed in the wrong thing, or nothing to lean the work on. This is the supporting kit: palettes, knives, brush washers and holders, tube squeezers, drawing boards, cutters, tapes and cleaners.

Two things worth knowing

A brush dies at the ferrule, not the tip. Water and pigment wick up into the glue seat, the hairs splay, and no amount of reshaping brings the point back — which is why a washer that keeps the ferrule out of the water outlasts the brush it protects. And a palette knife is not a substitute for a brush handle: the flex in the blade is what lets you mix a colour without whipping air into it.
