An easel is bought for one of three jobs and they rarely overlap. A studio H-frame or lyre easel is for working large and standing still: mass is the point, because a canvas that rocks under the brush ruins edges. A table easel tilts the work just enough to correct the distortion you get from drawing flat — you view a flat sheet at an angle but draw as if square to it, which is why flat drawings come out stretched. A field easel is bought for weight, not stability, and every gram matters once you are carrying it.
