Coloured pencils split by binder, and the binder decides how they behave. Wax-based pencils are soft, blend richly and burnish to a sheen, but bloom over time and fill paper tooth quickly. Oil-based pencils are harder, hold a point far longer and layer more times before the surface clogs, which suits detailed botanical and portrait work. Water-soluble pencils dissolve under a wet brush and behave like watercolour once you commit. Mixing binders on one sheet rarely works, so pick a system and stay in it.
