Sennelier made the first oil pastel in 1949 at Picasso's request, because he wanted something he could draw with directly onto any surface without preparation. The formula that resulted is unusually soft and heavily pigmented, and it never fully hardens. That is by design, and it is the single most important thing to know before you buy.

What that means in practice

Colour lays down like lipstick and blends with a finger, but finished work stays vulnerable and must be fixed, framed under glass with a spacer, or interleaved. Cheaper oil pastels are waxier and firmer: easier to store, far harder to blend. If you have only used the hard student kind, expect these to feel like a different medium.
