Granulation is not a technique you learn, it is a property of the pigment. Heavy, coarsely ground particles such as the natural earths, ultramarine and the cobalts sink into the hollows of the paper instead of staying suspended, and dry as visible texture. Fine modern synthetics stay put and dry flat no matter how you wash them.

How to get the most from them

Rough or cold-pressed cotton paper granulates far more than hot-pressed, because there are more hollows for the pigment to settle into. Use plenty of water and let the wash dry undisturbed and flat; tilting or blotting drags the settled particles and kills the effect.
