Liquitex made the first water-based acrylic paint for artists in 1955, and the medium range still reflects that: almost every problem people solve with water is better solved with a medium. Past roughly a quarter water by volume you stop thinning the paint and start breaking the acrylic binder, and the film loses adhesion and sheen.

Which one you need

Gel mediums add body and hold a brushmark. Fluid mediums thin without weakening. Retarders buy you working time in a dry studio. Pouring medium keeps colour flowing without crazing. Texture and modelling pastes build relief you can carve back into once dry. If you buy one, make it a gloss fluid medium: it thins, glazes and extends without changing much else.
