Caran d'Ache makes more grades of water-soluble pencil than almost anyone, and the grades differ mainly in how much pigment sits in the lead and how soft it is. Museum Aquarelle is the top of the range, pigment-dense enough to behave like tube watercolour once it is wet. Supracolor Soft is the workhorse: a soft 3.8 mm lead that dissolves completely and still blends well dry. Prismalo is the harder lead of the family and keeps a sharp point. Swisscolor and Fancolor are the student and children's grades.

Which one you need

For finished watercolour-style work, and anything you plan to sell, choose Museum Aquarelle. For sketchbooks, illustration and learning the technique, Supracolor gives the most for the money. Pick Prismalo if you draw fine line first and wash over it afterwards. Swisscolor and Fancolor are the sensible buy for school and first sets.
